Frequently asked questions

Which state has the highest median wage?
District of Columbia has the highest median wage for all occupations at $91,540 a year, and Puerto Rico has the lowest at $28,680 a year (BLS, May 2025).
What is the difference between the median and mean wage?
The median is the middle wage: half of workers earn more and half earn less. The mean is the average, which is pulled up by a small number of very high earners, so it is usually higher than the median.
